It's not just the size that counts. Silencers can sound so dashing that even harmless family carriages sound like wild sports cars. Aside from die-hard motor racing and tuning enthusiasts, many years hardly anyone could do anything with the tailpipes of a car. Meanwhile, the silencer have become a design object and, so to speak, the business card of the engine, which sits hidden under the hood. And not only do they look good, they also make sure that excursions through the countryside are not disturbed by rattling pipes and your residents can sleep peacefully.


Which silencer is right for your car?

Although it does not matter on the size, but silencers differ significantly in their functioning. The sound propagation can be reduced or prevented in four different ways:

• Reflection silencer: The silencer contains several (typically four) chambers to use the principle of sound reflection. Reflecting obstacles such as baffles, cross-sectional extensions and constrictions are arranged to prevent the propagation of sound and to reduce the sound pressure amplitude to a mediocre level. Particularly low frequencies are successfully attenuated by reflection.

• Absorption silencer: An absorption silencer contains porous material, usually rockwool, glass wool or fiberglass, which partially absorbs the sound energy, that is, converts it into heat. Absorption in the muffler mainly attenuates the upper frequencies. As a rule, reflection and absorption processes are combined in an exhaust system in order to cover the widest possible frequency spectrum.

• Interference muffler: If the exhaust gas flow is split and passed through several pipes of different lengths, the sound waves have to travel different distances. When the muffled sound waves meet again, they overlap and cancel each other out.

Active Active Mufflers: This relatively new technology can significantly reduce the noise of cars compared to classic mufflers. In addition, the electronic mufflers are smaller and lighter than traditional silencers and the reduced by about 35% back pressure has either an increase in performance or a reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.


How can you change the exhaust and muffler yourself?

The high temperature fluctuations, as well as the weather are particularly the mufflers and lead to a rather modest life. The change is best done with two people who should wear goggles, as it can always solve dirt or rust particles from the underbody of the car. Required spare parts for the change are a new rear silencer, a strap clamp and new retaining rubbers. The appropriate tool should be ready and the vehicle should be lifted with the lift or stand over a pit. The replacement part for the silencer comes with a welded piece of pipe. This tube has a larger diameter at the end, so that it can be placed over the old tube of the exhaust system and thus receives a good seal. Therefore, it is important to separate the old muffler at the appropriate place with an angle grinder or a hacksaw. Then you hang the rubber mounts of the muffler to be replaced and can take this off. Now the new silencer can be hung and the pipe joint put together. If it is difficult to put it through rusted areas, the pipe can be sanded down with sandpaper. The clamp can already be positioned and hand-tightened. The new silencer is properly aligned when all rubber mounts are evenly loaded. Now you can tighten the clamp.


How do you properly maintain your silencer?

All of a sudden it can be terribly loud under your car, drag the exhaust even sparks over the asphalt. The vehicle's own waste disposal company is not destroyed abruptly but creeping and is therefore usually not detectable until it is too late. To prevent the inner decomposition process, you can stick to a simple guideline: avoid short hauls! This is because the system does not heat up sufficiently and condensate accumulates in the silencers. In combination with the exhaust fumes, it forms weak acids, which corrode the metal jacket of the mufflers.
