Features and Benefits of Electric Trimmers and Thermal Trimmers

For a garden with an area less than 250m², the electric edger, also called grass trimmer, is perfectly adapted. It is light and quiet and generally weighs between 1.5 and 4.8 kg. Their power is between 300 watts and 1000 watts. Check the cable length and outlet arrangement you have, to make sure that an electrical source is accessible to cover your entire lot.

The cordless edger is a battery powered edge trimmer. It has the advantage of being more manageable, more practical and lighter, since it weighs no more than 3.8 kg. Nevertheless, check its autonomy, between 30 minutes and 60 minutes, and its charging time, between 45 minutes and 3 hours. An 18 volts can be adapted to a ground up to 400 m ². Beyond that, you have to favor a 36 volts. You can add a charger to double the life of your edger.

For a piece of land greater than 250 m², a thermal cutter is perfectly adapted. Its power is between 700 and 1000 watts. Its engine is 2-stroke or 4-stroke. If the 4-stroke is more economical, the 2-stroke is lighter. However, the thermal edge cutter is more autonomous, but also noisier.

Choose the power of your edge trimmer

The choice of power depends on two criteria.

First of all, the regularity of maintenance of your garden is to be taken into account. If you maintain your garden very regularly, a trimmer with a minimum of 400 watts of power is preferable.

Then look at the type of grass you want to maintain. If weeds are high density, expect a minimum of 400 watts. If weeds are supplemented with brushes that are difficult to maintain, do not go below 700 watts and choose a trimmer between 1 kW and 3 kW if you want to do it very regularly.

Other technical criteria to consider when choosing

Look at the cutting head. It must be protected from a hood, in order not to receive projections. It is equipped with one or two outlets of nylon thread, the diameter of which is between 1.2 mm and 2.4 mm. It can cut a width of 20 to 45 cm.

Then check the width of the handle, its ergonomics. It must allow easy handling and pleasant, during prolonged use.

The handle can be fixed or telescopic, to adapt to the size of the user. It is a real plus in terms of comfort of use.

Finally, the start-up switch is a key element to ensure good maneuverability. It is best if it works with two or four fingers.
